This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, volunteers make waves, reflects the reality that small actions, when taken together, can create lasting and meaningful change. At RTOERO, that spirit is alive and well.
Across the country, thousands of RTOERO members volunteer their time and energy—many through RTOERO districts and others in their broader communities. Their impact is wide-reaching.
“Giving back is one of RTOERO’s core values,” says John Cappelletti, board chair—and a volunteer himself. “It’s one of the reasons I was drawn to the organization. I was, of course, interested in the comprehensive group insurance program—but knowing it came with a strong commitment to social good sealed the deal for me.”
Here are a few of the ways RTOERO members and the organization make waves through volunteerism:
Showing care through goodwill – District goodwill volunteers reach out to members with calls, visits, and cards, ensuring no one feels forgotten. Their kindness fosters connection and well-being.
Supporting local action projects – Through RTOERO’s community grants, members across Canada contribute to meaningful local projects that enhance education, health, and the environment.
Advocating for change – Our volunteers use their voices to support key issues affecting the ability to age well in our communities, province and country.
Building social connections – District volunteers organize events, coordinate activities, and keep members engaged, which helps foster friendships, prevent social isolation and build community.
RTOERO’s volunteers also volunteer elsewhere in the community, inspiring others to give back, as many RTOERO members do. According to a 2024 survey, 79 percent of RTOERO members volunteer in some way. Every act of service encourages more people to join, creating an ongoing ripple effect of generosity.
“As a member-based organization founded by education community volunteers, RTOERO has always believed in the power of collective action,” explains Jim Grieve, CEO of RTOERO. “Our volunteers guide us forward and provide the local connection. “Their efforts may begin with a single action, but together, they’re creating waves that will be felt for years to come.”
Looking to make waves of your own? Connect with your local RTOERO district to explore volunteer opportunities that match your interests and availability. If you’re already involved at the district level, consider taking your leadership further—national roles are available through elections and appointments announced each fall.
