Ways to give

Together we will:

  • continue to advance knowledge about aging
  • help make sure everyone has access to age-appropriate, high-quality care and support as they get older
  • Monthly
  • One-time
  • Gifts in will
  • Tribute giving
  • Gifts of stock
  • Corporate
  • Other

We all deserve to age with dignity. You can help by joining The Honour Roll our monthly giving program, and making a monthly gift to the RTOERO Foundation today. Monthly giving is the most powerful way to build a better future for aging adults and is a convenient way to spread your generosity throughout the year.

Benefits to you:

  • Your monthly gift will reduce the number of appeals you receive from us each year.
  • It allows for easy, monthly budgeting and offers simplified tax receipting once a year.
  • Your money goes further. A monthly give can have a more significant impact because it allows us to be more effective and efficient.

Benefits to the foundation:

  • Your monthly gift will help provide the steady, reliable funding we need to keep our annual granting programs robust and meaningful.
  • It saves money. There’s less administrative and fundraising work with monthly giving. We can focus more on implementing projects and reporting our progress back to you.

Suggested wording for your will

It’s important that the wording of your legacy gift is clear so that the executors of the will may understand the purpose of the gift. Below is some suggested wording you can use in your will:

Legacy gift in will

“My estate trustees shall pay the sum of $ ______ (or transfer assets with an equal value) to The Retired Teachers of Ontario Foundation, Toronto, ON, for the purpose of supporting all programs, with a priority for those that improve the quality of life of seniors, as determined by the Foundation.”

Residual gift in will

“My estate trustees shall pay ____% of the residue of my estate (or the sum of $ ______) to The Retired Teachers of Ontario Foundation, Toronto, ON, for the purpose of supporting all programs, with a priority for those that improve the quality of life of seniors, as determined by the Foundation.”

The RTOERO Foundation is a registered Canadian charity and can issue tax receipts.

Legal name: The Retired Teachers of Ontario Foundation
Charitable number: 848662110RR0001

Thank you for thinking about the RTOERO Foundation as you make your plans for the future.

In memory gifts

An in-memory gift is a special tribute to a loved one. You can honour the memory of a special person in your life by making a donation to the RTOERO Foundation in his or her honour. The Foundation would be pleased to provide their family with a card notifying them that the donation was made.

In celebration gifts

Whether it is a birthday, anniversary, retirement or wedding, consider honouring a loved one with a donation in lieu of a gift. If you are celebrating a milestone birthday, anniversary or other celebration, your friends and family may be looking for gift ideas to honour you. A donation to the RTOERO Foundation in your honour is a wonderful way to help build a better future for all of us as we age.

When you donate your eligible, appreciated, publicly-traded stocks directly to the RTOERO Foundation, you can realize significant tax savings because no capital gains tax is required to be paid on the appreciated value of the securities.

This type of gift is the most tax efficient way to give in Canada. It allows you to make a meaningful and often larger gift now, and reduce the impact on your cash holdings.

You will also receive a charitable receipt that can be used to offset taxes payable in the year the donation is made or carried forward for up to five years.

If you would like to learn more about donating publicly listed securities to the RTOERO Foundation, please call Mike Prentice, Executive Director, at 416-962-9463 ext. 276 or 1-800-361-9888 ext. 276.

Four easy steps to make a donation of securities to support healthy active aging for all Canadians:

  1. In consultation with your professional advisor(s), complete and send the Securities Transfer Form to the RTOERO Foundation, to the attention of Mike Prentice, Executive Director, at [email protected] or fax the form to his attention at 416-962-1061.
  2. You will be contacted by the Foundation to confirm receipt of the Securities Transfer form.
  3. Your financial advisor is responsible for initiating the transfer between your financial institution and our custodial agent TD Direct Investing.
  4. A tax receipt for the donation amount will be sent to you once the securities have been legally transferred to the RTOERO Foundation’s account.

Additional information about your tax receipt:
Your tax receipt will be issued at the FMV (fair market value) of the closing price on the day the securities were legally transferred to the RTOERO Foundation’s account.

Securities/shares/stock are considered legally transferred only when our custodial agent TD Direct Investing confirms delivery. Your receipt is valued based on the closing price on the day when the shares are transferred. The RTOERO Foundation’s policy is to sell the shares as soon as possible after they have been received.

The RTOERO Foundation does not provide legal advice. We encourage you to talk to your professional advisor(s) who can help determine what kind of planned gift would be best for you, your family and your estate.
