• To become a CNIB Volunteer Braille Transcriber, applicants must complete the 8-month Braille Transcription course offered by CNIB (at no cost). This intensive course leads to certification in Unified English Braille (UEB), qualifying a person to transcribe English print materials into contracted braille.
• This course will require a commitment of 15 hours per week to complete classes and homework assignments. Classes are held Tuesday mornings, from September to April, at CNIB in Toronto or virtually via Zoom.
• Once certification is received, transcribers are asked to commit to volunteering 15 hours per week – virtually and in person (post-pandemic).
• This is a long-term volunteer commitment and applicants will be asked to come in for an interview, orientation and training. In addition, if you interact directly with our participants in your volunteering role, further screening is required: police record check, vulnerable sector check and reference checks.
